Description

TLS signed “Albert Edward,” one page, 7.5 x 9, Marlborough House letterhead, July 6, 1900. Letter to Ernest Clarke, in full: "On the completion of my year of office as President of the Royal Agricultural Society for the fourth time, I am anxious to place on record my high sense of the valuable assistance and support given to me throughout the year by the Council and Officers of the Society, and to express to them and to the general body of Members my sincere thanks for the cordial good will and loyal attachment which all those connected with the Society have shown to me during my long association with it as a Member of the Council." In fine condition. In a half year's time Edward would assume the throne as King of the United Kingdom, Emperor of India and, in an innovation, King of the British Dominions. He chose to rule as Edward VII, instead of Albert Edward, asserting that he did not wish to 'undervalue the name of Albert' and minimize the status of his father with whom the 'name should stand alone.'
