Description

The Virginia signer and legal scholar endorses an attorney in 1782

Scholar, jurist, opponent of slavery (1726-1806) who was the first of the seven Virginia signatories of the Declaration of Independence. Scarce Revolutionary War-dated ADS, signed “G. Wythe,” one page, 6 x 7, 1782. Wythe certifies that William Nelson is qualified to practice law, in full: "From an intimate acquaintance with Mr. William Nelson as well as from much and various conversation with him, on the subject of law among others, I am of opinion that he is very well qualified to practice the law in the courts of the Commonwealth." Signed at the conclusion by Wythe, with his monogrammed red wax seal affixed beside his signature. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 9 x 10. In fine condition.

Wythe was Chancellor of Virginia at this time, and had been and continued to be perhaps the most respected law teacher in the Colonies, later becoming head of the Law Department at William and Mary College. William Nelson could be the brother of Wythe’s fellow Signer from Virginia, Thomas Nelson. This William Nelson graduated from College in 1776, became a soldier, then himself became a law professor at William and Mary.
