Quoting a predecessor on the Supreme Court: "To recall what our country has done for each of us, and to ask ourselves what we can do for our country in return"

TLS signed “Sandra O'Connor,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, December 8, 1983. Letter to a collector, in part: "In response to your inquiry about how you can help promote Americanism, I can do no better than to quote one of my predecessors on this bench, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.: 'For, stripped of the temporary associations which gave rise to it, it is now the moment when by common consent we pause to become conscious of our national life and to rejoice in it, to recall what our country has done for each of us, and to ask ourselves what we can do for our country in return.' Address before John Sedwick Post No. 4, Grand Army of the Republic (May 30, 1884)." In fine condition, with light creasing to the top and bottom edges.
