Scarce textured matte-finish 4.75 x 7 photo of the famous 'McNulty-Butler' portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, taken at Springfield, Illinois by Christopher S. German previous to Lincoln's departure for Washington in January, 1861. Pencil notations along bottom read: "Copyright 1894, by H. W. Fay." In fine condition, with light silvering to the edges. Fay worked as an editor for the DeKalb Review before serving as custodian of the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois in 1921. An avid collector of Lincolniana, Fay owned 90 different portraits of Abraham Lincoln as part of his enormous collection—all of which he housed in a utility room within the Springfield Tomb.
