American author and socialist (1850-1898) most famous for his utopian novel, Looking Backward, which inspired the formation of at least 165 'Nationalist Clubs' dedicated to the realization of his political ideas. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 9.25, December 1, 1889. Letter to "Mr. Johnson," in part: "I shall be glad to furnish, Providence permitting, two articles on Nationalism. I don't like the idea of controversial articles (that is articles so advertised) but no doubt that can be fixed up. I don't mind criticism of course, but I think the spirit of antagonism which is roused by a formal joining of issues, is most unfavorable to openness of mind." In fine condition.
