Description

"If you prefer not to take any part in the controversy, please throw this letter in the waste-basket"

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.5 x 9, War Department letterhead, January 13, 1908. Letter to the Hon. Joel P. Heatwole, who represented Minnesota in the House of Representatives from 1895-1903, marked "Personal and Confidential." In full: "I have a note from Mr. Kellogg in which he suggests that I write to you and inquire from you what you think of the political situation in the State, for he regards you as occupying a position where your information would be valuable. Of course, I do not wish to trouble you in this matter, and if you prefer not to take any part in the controversy, please throw this letter in the waste-basket. I should, however, very much appreciate any advice or other assistance which you could give me in enabling me to learn the situation in your part of Minnesota." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
