Partly-printed DS, signed “Th: Jefferson” as president and “James Madison” as secretary of state, one page, 19.5 x 15.75, December 12, 1803. Four-language ship's paper issued to "Enos William of New York, master or commander of the Brig called the President…lying at present in the port of New York, bound for Madeira and laden with Flour, Corn, & Staves." Prominently signed in the center by President Jefferson, and diminutively signed below by Secretary of State Madison. The bright white paper seal affixed to the left side remains intact. In good condition but exceedingly fragile, with heavy toning, light staining, some small areas of paper loss, and several tears repaired on the reverse; both signatures are strong, and essentially unaffected by any flaws. A desirable early international trade document boasting two impressive examples of these founding fathers' signatures.
