Description

On the 1970 Senate race: "Needless to say, we were crushed by the defeat"

TLS signed “George,” one page, 8 x 10.5, House of Representatives letterhead, November 19, 1970. Letter to Robert Baum of Houston, Texas, replying to a letter concerning his recent defeat in the race for Senate during the 1970 midterm elections. In part: "Needless to say, we were crushed by the defeat. Frankly, things looked awful good just before the election, but I guess my going to the Senate is not to be, and so now 'on to the next event.' We're trying to decide what to do—whether to stay here in some capacity, or move back to Texas and get into business. Neither event is without challenge. I'm going to take my time to try to make the right decision." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope (bearing a preprinted free frank) and a carbon copy of Baum's letter to Bush. Baum was a lifelong friend of Bush, and he later became a juvenile and family law judge in Harris County.
