Description

Bold vintage ink signature, "Walt Whitman,” on an off-white 5.5 x 8.25 album page, which is also signed by John Jay Knox, who adds "Acting Comptroller." In fine condition, with some stains, and the unrelated signature above Whitman's, all easily matted out if so desired. Accompanied by a book page photo Whitman bearing a facsimile signature. Knox's role as acting or deputy comptroller between 1867 and 1872 falls in the same timeframe as that of Whitman, then working in the Attorney General's office in a capacity that included him interviewing former Confederate soldiers for Presidential pardons.
