Description

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 5.5, The Chicago Daily News, Editorial Rooms letterhead, January 14, 1922. Letter to poet and Smith College professor Grace Hazard Conkling, in full: "Your letter is hard to answer. I would like to do a preface. But I am already contracted on several jobs of writing now months overdue. One, a preface to the Boni & Liveright Modern Library edition of Whitman's prose is a year overdue, and the preface to Whitman's poems which reached them in September was a year later than they expected. Every preface I undertake is hell at the finish. Once promised they earn bitterness if not done. I am three months behind on an article on Illinois for The Nation. Except in day-day slapdash newspaper work I don't write easy at all; I never get through revising. No one is more dissatisfied with my books than I am. This is a frank answer to your letter with its fine heartbeats of you and Hilda in it. We can talk it over further at the Poetry Society dinner." In very good to fine condition, with old tape residue along the top edge, and toning from prior display.
