Description

Clinton's message of support to a corrupt Illinois congressman

ALS as president, one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, December 1, 1994. A farewell letter to Dan Rostenkowski, the former chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, in full: "You'll never know how much your support and wise counsel have meant to me. As you leave Congress, I hope you will go with the immense pride you should have in all you've done for our country. You have the gratitude of This President whom you served so well. Thank you. Godspeed." In fine condition, with faint edge toning. After 34 years of serving as an Illinois congressman, Rostenkowski was defeated for reelection in 1994 amid investigation by the Justice Department for his involvement in the House Post Office scandal. In 1996, he pleaded guilty to reduced charges of mail fraud and was fined and sentenced to 17 months in prison, 15 of which he served at the Oxford Federal Correctional Institution in Wisconsin. President Clinton pardoned Rostenkowski in December 2000, remarking that 'Rostenkowski had done a lot for his country and had more than paid for his mistakes.'
