Contract, in Spanish, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 11, January 2, 1958. Professional Baseball League of Puerto Rico contract in which Roberto Clemente agrees to "provide efficient and loyal services as a baseball player during the season of 1957-1958" for the Caguas-Rio Piedras, for a monthly salary of $1,000 plus $250 per month for expenses. Signed on the second page in fountain pen by Clemente and the team president, and countersigned on the third page by the team president and an official of the Puerto Rico Baseball League. In fine condition, with trivial foxing to edges.
During most off-seasons during his Major League career, Clemente returned to his native Puerto Rico to play winter ball. He began the 1957-58 season by resting his ailing back, suiting up for Caguas for the first time on January 12, 1958, just in time for the finals. He hit .529 in the series to lead Caguas in a four-game sweep, claiming the championship over Santurce, his former club. A fantastic document connecting Clemente to his beloved homeland.
