The 23-year-old Berra had become a mainstay in the Yankees lineup and behind the plate in 1948, and looked to continue in his productive starting role in 1949. He hit .277, walloped 20 homers, and made his second All-Star team, in addition to leading the Bronx Bombers to their first of five consecutive World Series titles between 1949 and 1953.
