Description

Three items relating to the funeral of President John F. Kennedy on November 25, 1963, including: a black-bordered funeral announcement, 5 x 8, with front embossed with the Great Seal and reading: “Funeral Services of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, late President of the United States, November Twenty-Fifth, Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Three, At Twelve Noon, Saint Matthews Cathedral, Rhode Island Avenue NW., Between 17th and 18th”; a black-bordered prayer card, 3.5 x 4.75, with portrait of Kennedy on the front and the reverse bearing three passages from his inaugural address; and a pink 3.75 x 2.5 cabinet ticket used for seating at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, issued as “Center Left Forward, Cabinet.” In overall fine condition.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the son-in-law of White Chief of Protocol Sanford L. Fox, from whose collection these items derive. Also included is a White House business card belonging to Fox, and a glossy photo of Fox looking over presidential engravings with Kennedy. Sandy Fox served seven presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Gerald Ford, working in various agencies before moving to the White House during the Eisenhower administration in 1959. An expert calligrapher who created the CIA logo, Fox was requested by Jacqueline Kennedy to design both the funeral announcement and prayer card, with this offered announcement one of only a handful that Mrs. Kennedy looked over for approval.
