ALS signed “W. W. Beckwith, Capt. & A.D.C.,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, Office of the Provost Marshal General letterhead, May 12, 1865. Letter to a Lynchburg woman regarding the fall of Richmond. In part: "We are in Richmond at last and…the information given you respecting Genl. Patrick being in command of the City is correct. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to call upon you which I shall do if at all practicable. Little did we expect when you passed through City Point that the death of the Confederacy was so near at hand. I regret not being able to inform you concerning your Richmond friends…But you know it is rather difficult for us Yankies to find the friends of those whom we have met." In fine condition.
