Description

American labor leader and civil rights activist (1927-1993) who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. TLS signed “Cesar E. Chavez,” one page, 8.5 x 11, United Farm Workers of America letterhead, April 13, 1978. Letter to Irwin M. Schuett, in part: "Nonviolence is very weak in the theoretical sense; it cannot defend itself. But it is most powerful in the action situation where people are using nonviolence because they want desperately to bring about some change. Nonviolence in action is a very potent force and it can't be stopped. The people who are struggling have the complete say-so. No man-made law, no human ruler, no army can destroy this. There is no way it can be destroyed except by those within the nonviolent struggle. Gandhi liberated an entire nation without an army. Dr. KIng's vision is shared by millions of Americans of many races and creeds. Nonviolence exacts a very high price from those who practice it. It demands hard work, sacrifice and resolve. But once you are able to meet these demands then you can do most things provided you have the time. And it has been the farm workers' experience that time does for the poor what money does for the rich." In very good to fine condition, with edge toning, and a light crease to the lower left corner. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
