Description

"Smokey is government property," writes Wendelin, "I have no rights to the character"

ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, June 25, 1992. Letter to Pati Costello, in part: "Smokey is government property and I have never given out sketches or drawings like the one requested, because such work can only be done by license or special permits, granted by Smokey Headquarters. I have no rights to the character and have only given away drawings, when no monetary use is involved, and then only to promote forest fire prevention, which is his only reason for existence. Sorry. I am just another government employee, with no staff for help, to help process and answer letters of your kind. I retired in 1973, am 82 and still try, as an individual to honor legitimate requests." In fine condition. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
