Description

"The ratio of drunks to dishes ran one hundred to one. I only hope I did not disgrace myself"

TLS, two pages, 5.5 x 8.5, The American Mercury letterhead, June 23, 1926. Letter to a Mr. Gray, in part: "Tell your mother to disregard my conversation entirely. I was in fact not quite myself when I reached the Country Club. Joe Hergesheimer had served a dinner I which the ratio of drunks to dishes ran one hundred to one. I only hope I did not disgrace myself. It seems to me that you are in the midst of a great mass of interesting and amusing material. What of an article of House Organs? It might be done under a nom de plume. I have seen some dreadful ones but there are also some that are excellent. I hope you'll let me see specimens of your own. Those published by William feather in Cleveland are very good. The notion seems to be prevalent that I try to force every contributor to The American Mercury to write in a set and invariable manner. This is wholly untrue. It is my constant effort to get variety into the magazine." In fine condition.
