ALS from Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, signed “Ever your aff't father,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, June 15 [1863]. Written from Port Royal, a letter to his son Raymond, with Rodgers adding to the upper margin, "Private" and "Do not let this be shown to any one but your mother," in part: "We have received more news from Wassaw. Your cousin, John, in the Weehawken has captured the Rebel Iron Clad Atalanta [sic], carrying four heavy guns, and one hundred and sixty five men. The Atalanta made the attack, but none of her shot struck the Weehawken. The Weehawken fired five shot, three of which took effect, smashing the Pilot House and badly wounding two of the pilots. A number of her men were also killed and wounded. Then she ran on shore and surrendered. She is a very fine vessel and can soon be made ready for service…I saw your uncle George yesterday; his ship is in admirable discipline and if he gets an opportunity, he will give you another good example." In fine condition.
