Description

United States Army officer (1823-1903) and a Union Army general in the American Civil War who was blamed for the debacle at Fredericksburg. ALS signed “W. B. Franklin,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Office of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. letterhead, June 14, 1869. Letter to William A. Baker of Auburn, New York, in full: "I do not remember the precise date of the formation of the 6th Corps. I think that the order assigning me to the command was issued on the day before the Army arrived at Cumberland on York River about the 10 or 11 of May 62. This was of course after the West Point engagement. The original formation was provisional, and was afterwards made permanent by the President. These data are all doubtless among the papers of the 6th Corps, which are on file in Wash'n. I have very few memoranda on the subject. It will be a pleasure to me however, to give you any information for which you ask, if I have it." Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition. Accompanied by an engraving bearing a preprinted signature.
