Staff officer and brigadier general (1838-1901) in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. Civil War-dated ALS signed “G. M. Sorrel,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, July 8, 1864. Letter to Major General Kershaw, in part: "It is proposed to make a second line in rear of Gen'l Field's position and as his troops have been exceedingly tasked the fatigue party will have to come from your Div'n. Gen'l Anderson desires therefore that you you will send a detail of three hundred men with proper proportion of officers…at nine o'clock tonight to report to Capt. McDonald. Engineer officer. The detail must have with 50 picks and 100 shovels." In fine condition, with some light stains and show-through from writing on reverse affecting a small portion of readability.
