American author, Union Army officer, and diplomat (1831-1895) remembered for his service on the staff of Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and then for his subsequent three-volume biography of Grant. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, November 27, 1894. Written from Ridgewood, New Jersey, a letter to E. D. Robb, in full: "I regret that it is not in my power to oblige you with an autograph of Edwin Booth. His letters to me were never signed in full, but only 'Edwin' or more often 'Ned.'" In fine condition.
