Description

Group of three ALSs in French, each signed "W. S. Maugham," totaling four pages on three sheets, no years. The first, to Marcel Thibaut of Revue de Paris, in part (translated): "My new novel will appear in England in a few days. I asked Agence Claurouin to send you a copy." The second, in part (translated): "For the moment I do not see anything that I can propose to you and as for The Letter, it is an old news that Madame Blanchet translated long ago and I suppose it appeared somewhere." The third, in part (translated): "An American professor writing a book (like all American teachers) asks me where is the following quotation from Sainte-Beuve: ‘The extreme happiness barely separated by a trembling leaf of extreme despair, Is not life?’ I read you enough to know that you know French literature and that you have an astonishing memory. The sentence is probably in one of the Monday Chats, but which one?" In overall fine condition. Accompanied by one original mailing envelope, addressed in Maugham's hand. A desirable trio of autograph letters, all boasting interesting literary content.
