Description

Matte-finish 4 x 5.75 photograph of Prince Arthur in the formal dress uniform of a General of the British Army, affixed to a 7 x 9 Alfred Ellis and Walery studio mount, signed on the mount in ink, "Arthur, 1904." Photo by Alfred Ellis and Walery of 51 Baker Street London. Displayed in a hallmarked (Birmingham 1904) sterling silver presentation frame with large crown finial to an overall size of 8 x 10.75. Rear of the photograph marked “Alfred Ellis & Walery, Photographers 51 Baker Street, London W,” with the access number 61577. In very good to fine condition, with moderate foxing to the mount.

Arthur was the seventh child (third son) of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A military man, he served in the British Army for 40 years, seeing active service in much of the British Empire. Also titled the Earl of Sussex, he was made Governor General of Canada in 1911. He became Queen Victoria’s last surviving son.
