Description

Mexican War and Union commander (1786-1866) nicknamed 'Old Fuss and Feathers' for his love of military pageantry. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, February 7, 1855. Letter to C. J. Faulkner, in full: " When I had the honour of being before your Committee, on Military Affairs, early last month, speaking of the additional brigadier generals, then under consideration, I, by mistake, referred to section 3, of the act May 8, 1792, for 'establishing a uniform militia thro'out the U. S.,' instead of referring to Section 8, of the act March 3, 1799, for 'the better encouraging of the troops (regulars) of the U. S.' In the latter, two regiments of infantry or cavalry are made, 'ordinarily,' a brigade, & in the former act, it declared that, for the militia, 'if the same be convenient, each brigade shall consist of four regiments.' The two provisions of law (& there is no other enactment of Congress on the subject) may be found in the Military Laws of the U. S. at pp. 92 & 296. May I beg of you the kindness to lay this note before your Committee at its next meeting." In fine condition.
