Description

Pre-Mercury group lot from Gordon Cooper

Three items: a TLS signed "Leroy S. Cooper, Jr.," one page, 8 x 10, Project Mercury letterhead, March 23, 1960, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Ken Browne, in part: "How is Mesa these days? We used to live there in 1950 when I was stationed at Williams AFB. We liked the town and the people there very much. Unfortunately, we don't have much time any more for hunting and fishing. I went hunting bear and deer down in the Dismal Swamp area here in Virginia two different times for one day and night this last winter. This next summer I hope to get in a little fishing here in the inland water areas, but time really gets pretty short when we are trying to get in all the training that we are, and trying to monitor all the engineering that goes into the capsule and missile systems"; an official glossy 8 x 10 NASA photo of Cooper with a rocket model in the background, signed in black ink, "Leroy S. Cooper, Jr.," with reverse bearing faded NASA caption text; and a color semi-glossy 8 x 10 photo of Cooper wearing his Mercury space suit next to a capsule model and surrounded by mist, signed and inscribed in black ink, "All best regards, to Mr. & Mrs. K. N. Browne, Gordon Cooper." The original mailing envelope is stapled to the letter. In overall very good to fine condition, with moderately heavy creasing to the portrait, lighter creasing to the color photo, and light paperclip impressions to all three items. Accompanied by an unsigned glossy 4 x 5 photo of Cooper.
