Description

Group of five items signed by American presidents:

Benjamin Harrison - Signature
Large and bold ink signature, "Benj. Harrison, Indiana,” on an off-white 6.5 x 3 slip. In fine condition, with a small tape stain that could easily be matted out. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.

William H. Taft - TLS
TLS as president signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, July 3, 1909. Letter to Dr. George W. Brush in Brooklyn, in part: "I greatly appreciate the election as an honorary member of U.S. Grant Post No. 327, G.A.R. General Tanner came in to see me and gave me the beautiful button that marks membership in your post. I value very much the friendship of the members of your post who stood by me when I needed them." In fine condition, with three small old tape stains in the signature area. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.

Gerald Ford - TLS
TLS signed “Jerry,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Congress of the United States, Office of the Minority Leader, House of Representatives letterhead, June 22, 1972. Letter to the Hon. Earl B. Ruth, a Republican congressman from North Carolina, in part: "Just a note as I leave for a two week trip to China. I am most grateful for your help on the crucial vote on the 'previous question' during the consideration of the President's revenue sharing legislation. Your 'aye' vote was most important to our success in this key proposal in the President's domestic legislative program." In fine condition, with a few light stains. Building upon President Nixon’s famous trip to the People’s Republic of China in February, Gerald R. Ford and Congressman Hale Boggs of Louisiana visited and met with Premier Chou En-lai from June 23-July 7, 1972.

Jimmy Carter - DS
DS, signed “James E. Carter, Jr.,” one page, 7.25 x 3.25, September 12, 1963. Receipt from Carter's Bonded Warehouse for "one bale of cotton received from R. C. McRee for storage in course of interstate of foreign commerce," designating it as number 4763 with a weight of 455 pounds. In fine condition.

Bill Clinton - TLS
TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, State of Arkansas letterhead, December 15, 1980. Letter to Paul Cappleman in Kansas, in full: "I received your Christmas greetings and the very thoughtful message. I want you to know how very much I appreciate your thinking of me, and I hope your holiday season is the happiest ever." Clinton handwrites "Paul" in the opening salutation. In fine condition.
