Description

Group of four items signed by authors and artists:

Rudyard Kipling - Signature
English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist (1865-1936) known for such works as The Jungle Book and Kim. Fountain pen signature, "Rudyard Kipling,” on an off-white 2.25 x .5 slip affixed and pinned to a transmittal letter in another hand. The letter has subsequently been affixed to a larger scrapbook page. In fine condition.

Bret Harte - ALS
American author (1836-1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat.' ALS signed “Link,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 6.75, August 31, 1891. Letter to "My dear Nan," in part: "It was so late last month when I received money enough to send your usual draft that I telegraphed it, and that is the reason why you did not receive any letter from me. I am again forced to telegraph the draft, as only yesterday I received some of the sums due me from America. It is a pity that I cannot arrange to have the American dues paid to you there—but it is so uncertain when they pay that I fear you would be a month or two in arrears…I have been out of London nearly the whole season—for I have been at work on my plays. I have finished two more; one Mr. Frohman has taken to America to see what he can do with it, and the other my collaborator is offering to London managers. I hope and pray something may come of one of them for 'Susy' hangs fire with the managers yet, although there is an actress who would like to play the principal role. If I could get a real 'money' success with the play it would give me great relief from this hand to mouth existence which depends upon my writing day after day, and leaves me no chance to recuperate my brains." In fine condition.

William Cullen Bryant - ALS
American romantic poet, journalist, (1794-1878) who served as the longtime editor of the New York Evening Post. ALS signed “W. C. Bryant,” one page, 5.25 x 8.5, November 10, 1877. Letter to Carl Theodore Eben, in part: "Both the articles referred to in your obliging letter were duly sent me. The manner in which you have spoken of my writing & is only too kind and I am greatly obliged to you making me so favorably known to the German race in the United States." He adds a handwritten and initialed postscript, "P.S. Enclosed is the photograph which you have requested of me. W.C.B." In fine condition, with a lightly trimmed right edge. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.

Ernest Meissonier - ALS
French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon and his armies (1815-1891). ALS in French, signed “E. Meissonier,” one page, 4.5 x 7, July 27, 1889. Letter to "Dear Minister," in part (translated): "Permit me, please, to remind you that tomorrow, Sunday, at nine o'clock, you are coming to chat a bit with me. I am looking forward and I will try to be neither long nor boring." In fine condition.
