Description

General Eaker encloses some "items of personal uniform which I wore during the war years"

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, July 3, 1963. Letter to Jim Schendel, in full: "I was very much interested in your letter of June 8th, and regret that my absence has prevented an earlier reply. I am enclosing some items of personal uniform which I wore during the war years, as of possible interest to you in connection with your collection. They are: The Stars of a Lieutenant General from a war time uniform. / The U. S. collar insignia. / The gold bars that indicate the years of service overseas in the war, six months for each bar. / The wings of a Command Pilot. / The insignia of the Eighth Air Force, which I commanded in England from January 1942 to January 1944. / The insignia of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces, which I commanded from January 1944 to May 1945. / The arm patch of the U. S. Army Air Forces. You do indeed have an interesting hobby, and I am only hopeful that these souvenirs of my war time service will fit your requirement." Included with the letter are the referenced items: three stars from a "Lieutenant General from a war time uniform;" a US collar insignia; gold bars for overseas service; and the insignia of the "Eighth Air Force." In overall very good to fine condition, with staining and a rusty paperclip impression to the letter.
