ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 4, 1856. Letter to James Macmanus, in part: "I return you the enclosed with many thanks for the opportunity which you have afforded me of perusing it as a historical curiosity. The whole affair is antiquated & has lost its interest. I am glad to learn from yourself & other friends 'that Old Centre will be herself again' at the approaching election. I have always confidently believed that the sentiments in favor of the union, at this crisis when it is in imminent peril, would produce results in favor of the Democrats which few have anticipated." In fine condition, with scattered light creasing. Buchanan, a Democrat, would go on to be elected as president in the 1856 election.
