Souvenir typescript detailing "The Flight of Aurora 7: The Fourth Manned Mission of Project Mercury," one page, 8.5 x 11, NASA letterhead, no date. In part: “With twenty-two minutes remaining in the third and final orbit, a near-disaster began to unfold between Hawaii and California; Carpenter began to prepare for the most critical phase of the flight—return and re-entry. Due to a malfunction in the automatic controls which put the Mercury capsule into an incorrect re-entry altitude—coupled with excessive fuel consumption—Carpenter was forced to assume manual control of his craft…Although initial telemetry and medical sensors indicated that Carpenter and the spacecraft had survived the re-entry, no further transmissions ensued from the capsule or from ground control for thirty-five anxiety filled minutes.” Signed at the bottom in black ink by Carpenter. In fine condition.
