United States Army officer and an American Medal of Honor recipient (1884-1921) who led the 'Lost Battalion' in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918 during the final stages of World War I; at the age of 37, he disappeared while aboard the SS Toloa and was never seen again. Rare TLS signed “Charles W. Whittlesey,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Pruyn and Whittlesey, Attorneys at Law letterhead, November 22, 1919. Letter to J. Vaughn Bowly, in full: "Mr. A. Felix Du Pont of Washington, Delaware, has sent me a pigeon dispatch book which he tells me you found near Binarville, France, and asked him to forward me if I cared to have it. The book is filled with messages which I sent by pigeon and is of the greatest interest to me, so that I am delighted to have it in my possession, and I wish to express my appreciation of your courtesy in this matter. There is one of the messages in particular which I have been extremely eager to find and had come to believe permanently lost so that I greatly appreciate your kindness." In very good condition, with intersecting folds, creasing, and paperclip impressions to the top edge.
