Mathematician and astronomer (1851-1907) who served as the head of the Department of Astronomy at Columbia University, where he oversaw the construction of the school’s first observatory as its director. TLS signed “J. K. Rees,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Columbia University, Astronomical Observatory letterhead, February 23, 1900. Letter to Edmund Zalinski, in full: "I have today ordered the calculating machine from Schuster of Berlin, I told him to send it to Captain Zalinski, New York City, and requested him to write you at 7 West 43rd Street." In fine condition. Zalinski served at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as professor of military science. His name became widely known in connection with the invention and development of items of military technology, particularly the pneumatic dynamite torpedo-gun.
