Description

"Admiration of and gratitude for the superb conduct of the Russian Army in this struggle to save civilization"

Nobel Prize-winning physicist (1868-1953) who was the first to isolate the electron and measure its charge. TLS signed “R. A. Millikan,” one page, 8.5 x 11, California Institute of Technology letterhead, January 19, 1943. Letter to Jessica Smith of Soviet Russia Today, in full: "I think you will agree that the sponsors of an activity should be those who know it thoroughly and really assist in directing it. In the case referred to in your wire of the 16th, distance makes this impossible for me, so that I think you will agree that I should not replace an active sponsor, since your list of published sponsors is necessarily a limited one. I am very happy, however, to express my great admiration of and gratitude for the superb conduct of the Russian Army in this struggle to save civilization and destroy the power of the bandit nations." Millikan makes a few handwritten emendations to the text. In fine condition.
