Description

English physicist (1891-1974) who was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932, thus paving the way towards the fission of uranium-235 and the creation of the atomic bomb. ALS signed “J. Chadwick,” one page, 8 x 10, 16 Grange Court letterhead, June 7, 1972. In full: "I apologize for my long delay in replying to your letter of 18 May—a letter in which you were too kind to me, but which I appreciated. The delay was caused by my absence from home; and, because my doctor advised me to take a complete rest. I did not have any letters or other communications forwarded to me. I have no suitable photograph to send; they have gone long ago, and I have not been well enough to replace them. All I can do is send you a card on which I have put my signature." In fine condition.
