Description

English physicist (1891-1974) who was awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932, thus paving the way towards the fission of uranium-235 and the creation of the atomic bomb. ALS signed “J. Chadwick,” one page, 8 x 10, 16 Grange Court letterhead, July 28, 1971. In full: "I apologize if I did not reply to a previous letter from you. Perhaps my reply was mislaid in the post during the postal strike, for it is very seldom indeed that I fail to reply to such a letter as yours, even if it is only to say that I cannot fulfil [sic] the request. And this is what I must reply to you. I do not keep manuscripts longer than I require them for my own use. I can do no more than put some words on a postcard." In fine condition, with a crease to the lower right corner.
