Planter, soldier, and politician (1732-1792) who served as a major general during the Revolution and later served as governor of Maryland. ALS signed “W. Smallwood,” one page, 7.25 x 8.75, July 3, 1786. Letter to Abraham Cox, in part: "I have contracted with Mr. Ferguson for my Tobacco who has engaged to order you Payment of one Hundred pounds Maryland currency in Mr. Gibson's Hands." The reverse is endorsed by Cox to confirm receipt of the funds. In fine condition.
