Magnificent original 13 x 17 albumen portrait of John L. Sullivan in a pugilistic pose by J. Wood of New York, circa 1885, affixed to its original 18.5 x 23 mount. Printed on the mount is a caption, "John L. Sullivan, (Champion of the World)," with his fight record provided below. The last bout listed is his victory against Jack Burke on June 13, 1885. It also notes his previous Madison Square Garden fight against Paddy Ryan, a draw because "the Police interfered and stopped the match." Sullivan's next match would come against Dominick McCaffrey on August 29, 1885; since it is not listed, this piece presumably dates to the summer of 1885. Framed to an overall size of 22.5 x 27. In very good to fine condition, with light staining along the bottom border and a band of horizontal toning to the center.
