British historian and archaeologist (1817-1894) best known as the excavator of Nimrud. ALS signed “A. H. Layard,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, September 5, 1851. Letter to "My dear Gordon," in part: "I shall probably leave England on the 16th or 17th for my usual autumnal run into Italy…I shall return in November and you would not, I presume, think of starting an expedition until the early spring…I am curious to see how affairs are going in Italy. It is difficult to judge by mere newspaper reports." In fine condition.
