American architect (1906-2005) who is best known for his works of modern architecture, including the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, and his works of postmodern architecture; in 1978, he was awarded an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, and in 1979, the first Pritzker Architecture Prize. Glossy 8 x 10 seated portrait of the award-winning architect, originally taken by noted photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, "Philip Johnson, best wishes to Mr. Kaat, 1987." Reverse bears an affixed caption crediting the photo to Mapplethorpe. In very fine condition. Consignor notes that the photograph derives from the personal collection of Johnson.
