ALS signed “Alexander H. Stephens,” one page, 4.75 x 6, March 25, 1875. Letter of introduction and recommendation to the Hon. William Walter Phelps, in part: "A young friend of mine, James S. Glaze, who will hand you this…is of good character, good habits, and…is to complete his education at Yale College." In fine condition, with trimmed edges, and a split to the vertical fold passing through the signature. Phelps had just completed his term as one of New Jersey's congressman, and would later serve as US ambassador to Austria-Hungary and Germany. Phelps had graduated from Yale as valedictorian of his class in 1860.
