Politician and lawyer from Maryland (1813-1883) who served in Lincoln's cabinet as postmaster general during the Civil War. ALS signed “M. Blair,” one page, 8 x 10, January 24, 1849. Written from St. Louis, a letter to Secretary of the Navy John Young Mason, in part: "I respectfully recommend Caernarvon Richards for a Midshipman warrant. His family are old residents of this county & his step-father Gen. Wm. Milburn…is a man of high standing in our community, having received the appointment of Surveyor Genl for…Missouri from M. Van Buren, & after being removed by the succeeding administration was twice elected Sheriff of St. Louis County by the people, & has received various other marks of public favour." In fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite of Blair.
