Description

Blair's conception of Alice in the 'Queen of Hearts and Cards' sequence

(Walt Disney Studios, 1951) Fantastic original concept painting by Mary Blair for Alice in Wonderland, portraying Alice in the 'Queen of Hearts and Cards' sequence, in which the queen's minions sing 'Painting the Roses Red.' The wonderful, vibrant artwork portrays the unsettling scene as Alice is surrounded by the surreal personified playing cards. Accomplished in tempera on 10 x 9.25 artist's board. In fine condition, with tack holes at corners. Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World), and her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse. An exceptional piece of vivid concept artwork from a classic Disney feature. Learn more about our animation expert, Harry Kleiman.
