Description

ALS signed “Old ('Sagebrush Joe') Thornton,” one page both sides, 6 x 7, 50 Deepwood Drive letterhead, January 16, 1962. In full: "Many many thanks for your enlivening wire. Well—we got off to a mixed reception, but so far (clement weather aiding) people are finding their way down below the Square. I'm very pleased with what's there—my few reservations I'd only share with you sotto voce. Friday I go to Atlantic City to work for a week with Jerome Kilty on that half-drama half-reading version of The Ides of March; then to Germany for the opera-premiere, then, oh, boy! To my hermit’s life in Arizona. Cactus and rattlesnakes, here I come. Read-a-little, loaf-a-little, drink-a-little and maybe after a while write-a-little. But from silence and solitude I'll remember your good selves.” Thornton has written the salutation in colored pencil. In fine condition, with scattered light creasing.
