Description

Rathbone's screen-worn vest from Romeo and Juliet

Iconic beige under-vest with metal almond-oval amulets covering the sleeves, famously worn on screen by Basil Rathbone as the antagonist Tybalt in the Oscar-nominated 1936 film Romeo and Juliet. The under-vest can be viewed in many sequences, in particular the ill-fated sword fight he has with Romeo. The chest and back of the vest are of a beige cotton, while the sleeves, with tri-padded shoulders, are of a tan felt, with the interior lined in cream-colored satin, and the sleeve ends featuring ornate metal drawstrings. The chest can be fastened with a series of ten hooks (one missing), and the inside collar bears both a Western Costume Company stamp, with size 46, and label, which is marked with number, “10078 #3,” and name, “B. Rathbone.” Also includes a tan-colored cummerbund with gold piping pattern. In very good condition, with scattered stains and fraying, and a few tears along seams and collar. For his role as Tybalt, the chief rival Romeo, Rathbone was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 9th Annual Academy Awards.
