Description

British author (1824-1889) regarded as the first British detective story writer. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, April 24, 1889. Letter to Mrs. Knox, in part: "Let me thank you for kindly interesting yourself in my slow journey back to health. I get out in the middle of the day—and there is the remedy that is doing me good. But the night air is still forbidden—and, in respect of champagne and pate de fois gras, my back is still brutally turned on those sweeteners of human life, and the doctor's 'muzzle' remains mercilessly 'on.' Luckily for me I must work and do work. The artists and the printers are already employed on a new story of mine which is to being in The Illustrated London News in July next—and a good third of which remains to be written. While I can walk and while I can write, I may hope to make my next report of myself personally in Victoria Street—especially if Knox will cheer me by setting an example of the severest and most uncompromising health." In fine condition.
