Description

Revolutionary war figure (1756-1838) who served as Captain of George Washington's Life Guard; he was grandfather of Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States. ALS signed “W. Colfax,” one page, 6.25 x 8, April 8, 1783. Letter to Major Nicholas Fish of the 2nd New York Regiment, in part: "Enclosed I send you a return of the man belonging to your Regt. serving in my company—I have only to request you would be pleased to direct your P'master to adjust this amt. applicable to the return." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, light staining, and some old adhesive residue. Fish was an American Revolutionary War soldier and the first Adjutant General of New York; he was the father of New York Governor and US Secretary of State Hamilton Fish.
