Letter to Sharpless Dodson Green, a public school administrator from Trenton, New Jersey, in part: "Please say to your students: There is no new way to success. Man does not change much from generation to generation. Industry is indispensable to achievement but is of little value unless it is intelligently directed. Man needs to have mental training that he may wisely use his time and energy. But even intelligence is not sufficient for the mind is merely a mental machine. It has no morals; it obeys its master as faithfully when he plots a murder as when he plans for service to society. Man needs something more than intelligence and industry. He needs a spiritual vision of life that he may understand how to so employ his powers of both body and mind as to make the largest contribution to society and thus entitle himself to draw largely from the common store." In very good to fine condition, with toning to the edges and a smudge to the signature. Accompanied by a secretarially signed slip authorizing the publication of the letter. In this same year, Bryan published In His Image, a book exploring modern Christianity.
