Description

Italian patriot and soldier (1807-1882) best known for leading the attack of the 'Red Shirts' on Sicily in 1860. LS in French, signed “G. Garibaldi,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, Armee des Vosges letterhead, October 23, 1870. Untranslated letter sent early in his command of the Army of the Vosges during the Franco-Prussian War. In fine condition, with scattered light creasing and a small hole to the lower left blank area. Boasting a worldwide reputation as a liberal revolutionary, Garibaldi offered his services to the French Third Republic in their struggle against Prussia. He assumed command of troops at Marseille on November 7, 1870, and soon surprised a Prussian force of one thousand men at Chatillon. Subsequent skirmishes were less successful, and the Army of the Vosges was forced to retreat to Dijon.
