French poet and writer (1900-1944) and pioneering aviator known for the classic book The Little Prince. While flying for the Free French Air Force in North Africa during World War II, he disappeared over the Mediterranean. Original unsigned ink sketch accomplished by Saint-Exupery on an off-white 8.25 x 10.5 sheet, showing a detailed mechanical cog or gear system, with the image repeated ten more times in a much more simplified manner, each labeled by Saint-Exupery. Along the left edge, he has doodled a seemingly unrelated character with wide eyes and a large nose. In very good condition, with some splitting along the intersecting folds, paper loss to edges (most notable to upper left corner), a few small edge tears, and some scattered toning. Any artwork from Saint-Exupery is quite scarce, particularly such an intriguing, intricate example.
